The Reading Foundation for Art was established as a Registered Charity in 1974. It has two aims, to create a collection of significant works of art that are cared for by Reading Museum Service and to help the museum to acquire works for its collection.

To date the Reading Foundation for Art has created its own collection of one hundred and twenty works of art including, among others:

  • Oil paintings by the important Modern British artists Paul Nash, Mary Fedden, Julian Trevelyan and Jennifer McRae;
  • Sculptures by John Tweed and Maggi Hambling;
  • Prints by John Piper, Terry Frost and Sir Peter Blake;
  • Ceramics by local potters Alan Caiger-Smith and Geoff Eastop;
  • Photographic collections by contemporary Reading artist Jim Harold.
The Foundation has also contributed to the acquisition of over one hundred works in the Museum's Art Collection. These include works by Modern British artists, William Roberts, John Piper and Christopher Nevinson as well as 18th and 19th century artists such as Joseph Farrington and William Havell.

The first donation to its trust fund was anonymous and other donations have continued to support its work. Further donations to the Reading Foundation for Art are always welcomed. The Trustees can be contacted via Reading Museum Service.
